EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic Abraham Lincoln Statue, which once stood proudly in Parliament Square, Westminster, London. The statue, a replica of the original piece by renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was erected in the early 20th century as a symbol of appreciation for Lincoln's role in ending slavery and preserving the Union during the American Civil War. Lincoln's stoic figure, with his hands in his pockets and a thoughtful expression on his face, stands tall on a plinth, surrounded by ornate railings. In the background, the Buxton Memorial Fountain can be seen, originally constructed in Parliament Square but later removed in 1940 and placed in its present position in Victoria Tower Gardens in 1957. The fountain, adorned with intricate sculptures and figures, adds an elegant contrast to the rugged texture of the statue's base. The statue, which now stands slightly in front of the Middlesex Guildhall, was a gift from the people of Chicago and is a testament to the enduring bond between the United States and the United Kingdom. This photograph, taken circa 1920, captures a moment in time when two great nations honored their shared history and celebrated the legacy of one of America's most revered presidents.
