Rhodesia Collection

Rhodesia was a British colony in southern Africa that existed from 1965 to 1979. It was named after Cecil Rhodes, the British imperialist who founded the territory. The country was divided into two entities: Southern Rhodesia and Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). In 1965, the white minority government of Ian Smith declared independence from Britain without consulting the black majority population. This led to a civil war between Smith's forces and black nationalist groups such as n National Union (ZANU) and n People's Union (ZAPU). After years of fighting, international pressure forced Smith to accept majority rule in 1979. The new nation became known as Zimbabwe, which is still an independent state today. Despite its tumultuous history, Zimbabwe has made progress towards democracy and economic development in recent years.
