Us-Helios Prototype 2
This November, 1999 NASA file photo taken from the NASA Internet site 26 June, 2001 shows the solar-powered Helios prototype in flight over a lake bed at NASAs Dryden Flight Research Center in California. NASA plans to send the 15 million USD, solar-powered experimental plane into the skies over Hawaii sometime in July, achieving speeds no faster than a bicycle, powered by 14 electric motors not much stronger than hair dryers.
NASA has billed the unmanned, remotely piloted Helios as the first step toward an aircraft that will soar at 100, 000 feet -- or 20, 000 feet above the current record for a propeller-drive airplane and more than three times higher than commercial jets routinely travel. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the groundbreaking moment when NASA's Helios Prototype 2 took flight over a serene lake bed at the Dryden Flight Research Center in California. Taken in November 1999 and sourced from NASA's Internet site, this image showcases the solar-powered experimental plane that would soon make history. With plans to send it soaring above Hawaii in July, NASA aimed to achieve speeds no faster than a bicycle, propelled by 14 electric motors not much stronger than hair dryers. Unmanned and remotely piloted, the Helios was hailed as an essential first step towards revolutionizing air travel. Its mission? To reach unprecedented heights of 100,000 feet – an astonishing altitude surpassing current records for propeller-driven aircraft by a staggering 20,000 feet. This ambitious endeavor would place it more than three times higher than commercial jets routinely traverse. The significance of this technological marvel cannot be overstated. As sunlight bathes its wings with energy, the Helios harnesses the power of our nearest star to propel itself through the skies. A testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress, this innovative prototype represents mankind's tireless pursuit of pushing boundaries and exploring new frontiers. Through Tom Tschida's lens, we are granted a glimpse into humanity's quest for advancement beyond what was previously deemed possible. The horizontal composition accentuates both the grandeur of nature below and the limitless potential above as our aspirations take flight alongside this remarkable aircraft.
