EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured on June 14,1976, in Paris, Lionel Poilane proudly presents a unique creation in his family bakery on Rue du Cherche-Midi. Standing amidst the warm aroma of freshly baked bread, he holds up a birdcage meticulously crafted out of dough, intended as a gift for the renowned Spanish painter Salvador Dali. The image exudes an air of creativity and whimsy as Poilane showcases his mastery in transforming ordinary ingredients into extraordinary art. The delicate details of the birdcage reveal the skillful craftsmanship that went into its making – a testament to Poilane's dedication to his craft. However, behind this enchanting scene lies a tragic tale. On November 1st, 2002, at the age of 57, Lionel Poilane's life came to an untimely end when his helicopter crashed off the coast of Cancale. The very aircraft he piloted was discovered submerged beneath turbulent waters just one evening prior. This poignant photograph serves as both a celebration of Lionel Poilane's artistic ingenuity and a somber reminder of life's fragility. It captures not only his passion for baking but also hints at the fleeting nature of existence itself. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time by Yvon Gallois from Agence France-Presse (AFP), we are reminded to cherish each moment with those who inspire us creatively while honoring their memory through their remarkable contributions to our world
