Seal Protest Grows: Public outrage at the heartless methods used in killing baby seals
Seal Protest Grows: Public outrage at the heartless methods used in killing baby seals grew in strength on Monday 17th March when actress Joanna Lumley handed in a petition of 26,000 signatories at No. 10 Downing Street. Over the next two weeks in Newfoundland, 180,000 baby seals will be clubbed to death using a pole with a spike sunk into the tip. The worldwide protest at the totally unnecessary cruelty has received a lot of publicity recently, but the Canadian government have not responded with missionary zeal, beyond developing a humane killer, but there are no plans to introduce it to the ice fields where the seals congregate. A Canadian Minister once likened the bloody destruction of the hapless baby seals as being no different to picking oranges. March 1980 P000764
