Earwig head, SEM Featured 30 Apr 2001 Image

Earwig head, SEM

Earwig. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified earwig (order Dermaptera). The bases of the long, slender antennae (purple, upper frame), which can consist of as many as 50 individual segments, can be seen. The earwig is a nocturnal omnivore which feeds on carrion, live insect prey and flower petals. It possesses mandibles (jaws, brown, upper centre) designed for biting and cutting its food. The earwig seeks out dark, narrow crevices during the day. Magnification unknown
