Chronic bronchitis, X-ray Featured 5 Sep 2002 Print

Chronic bronchitis, X-ray

Chronic bronchitis, coloured X-ray. This condition almost exclusively affects smokers. It is often associated with emphysema, which is known as COLD (chronic obstructive lung disease). Bronchitis shows up as the faint streaky areas on either side of the spine. This is caused by inflammation of the lining of the bronchi, the air tubes in the lungs. Chronic bronchitis causes sputum, a yellow- green fluid, which is coughed up over several years. The lungs occupy the spaces either side of the spinal column (running vertically down centre), and are surrounded by the ribs (horizontal bands). The heart (yellow, lower right) and diaphragm (across bottom) are seen

The River Nile is visible meandering through the dark band of fertile land which runs across Egypt, the landmass in the lower portion of the frame. Separated from the rest of Egypt by the Gulf of Suez is the Sinai Peninsula, with Mount Sinai itself prominent in the rocky mass on the right hand tip. The Gulf of Aquaba separates Sinai from Saudi Arabia at upper right. The Dead Sea which lies on the Israeli/Jordanian border is visible just above the centre of the frame
