MAZES - HADSTOCK Photograph of the maze on the gravestone of the artist, Michael Aryton
MAZES - HADSTOCK
Photograph of the maze on the gravestone of the artist, Michael Aryton (who died in 1975), in the burial g rounds of St. Botolph's church, Hadstock. This maze, with raised walls, is constructed in copper. It design recalls Aryton's interest in the story of Daedalus, the Athenian craftsman who is supposed to have designed the maze in Crete, wherein the terrible man-bull (the Minotaur) was imprisoned. Daedalus is famed for the wings he constructed, from feathers and wax, to enable him and his son, Icarus, to escape from the island of Crete. Since the Aryton maze is designed to resemble the shape of a butterfly's wing, it is reasonable to assume that it was intended to recall this idea of flight. A colour image of the Hadstock maze is in the Charles Walker archives

He became one of the first Royal Designers for Industry in 1936
