Whitley Bay, LNER poster, 1930

Poster produced by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote train services to Whiteley Bay, Tyne and Wear. Artwork by Fred Taylor (1875-1963), who was commissioned in 1930 to design four ceiling paintings for the Underwriting Room at Lloyd's and murals for Reed's Lacquer Room. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries and worked for the Empire Marketing Board, LNER, London Transport and several shipping companies

Lincolnshire, LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to Lincolnshire. Artwork by Tom Purvis (1888-1957), who rallied for the professionalisation of commercial art. In 1930 he was one of the group of artists who founded the Society of Industrial Artists, which campaigned for improved standards of training for commercial artists in order to broaden their scope of employment. He became one of the first Royal Designers for Industry in 1936

Salturn-by-the-Sea, LNER poster, 1923-1929

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote train services to Saltburn-by-the-Sea in Cleveland. The poster shows a view of the beach, cliffs and the entrance to the pier, where couples with parasols are seen strolling. The resort has the only pier in North East England and was famed for its white sands. Artwork by Henry George Gawthorn (1879-1941), who started out as an architect but later turned to pictorial art. He wrote several books on poster design and publicity and produced posters for LNER. He often inserted a self-portrait into many of his posters, complete with pince-nez and a panama hat
