ALICE detector magnets Featured 19 Mar 2003 Print

ALICE detector magnets

ALICE detector magnets during construction. ALICE is "A Large Ion Collider Experiment" for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The internal space (full of scaffolding) will contain the rest of the detector which will be inserted by opening the magnet doors seen. The central hole in the doors will allow ALICE to be placed around part of the 27-kilometre-long underground LHC ring that will accelerate ion beams to collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles whose decay products will be detected. A magnet is required to detect charged particles. The LHC is scheduled to start operating in 2007

CMS detector Featured 19 Mar 2003 Print

CMS detector

CMS detector being built. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) is a detector at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The central hole (above man's head) will surround part of the LHC, a 27-kilometre-long underground ring. Proton beams will be accelerated by the LHC to collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles that will decay into other particles. These will be detected by the many detector layers that will fill the central space. Here, there are the layers (red) of the muon detector. A muon is a heavy version of an electron. The LHC is scheduled to start operating in 2007
