Active Sun
Active Sun, computer artwork. The Sun is a huge ball of hydrogen gas, ionised into a plasma by the immense temperatures that are generated by nuclear fusion at the core of the Sun. This fusion is ignited by the immense pressure generated by the Sun's mass. The activity of the Sun includes ejections of plasma from the surface of the Sun, and a surface in constant and violent turmoil. The Sun's light and heat directly or indirectly provides the energy for almost all of the life on Earth. The Sun's diameter is over 100 times the Earth's diameter. Its mass is more than that of 330, 000 Earths. The Earth-Sun distance is an average of some 150 million kilometres

False-col SEM of yeast cells
Yeast. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of yeast cells, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as Baker's or Brewer's yeast, growing on potato dextrose agar. Yeast is able to ferment sugar, producing alcohol & carbon dioxide in the process. It has long been used in the brewing of beer, the production of wine and in baking of leavened bread (carbon dioxide causes the dough to rise). Medically, dried yeast is used as a source of vitamin B1, riboflavin & nicotinic acid. Yeast divide rapidly by budding off new cells (visible here). They may also reproduce sexually. Magnification: X 430 at 35mm size. Coloured orange. Original is BW print B250/171
