Vitamin B1 Featured 27 May 2003 Print

Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1. Computer model of a molecule of vitamin B1 (thiamine, C12.H17.N4.O.S), a water- soluble vitamin. The atoms (solid tubes) of this organic molecule are colour-coded: oxygen (red), carbon (yellow), hydrogen (grey), nitrogen (blue) and sulphur (green). Thiamine is important for the normal function of the heart, muscles and nervous system, as well as normal growth and development. Flour, beans, pork and salmon provide thiamine. An excessive deficiency of thiamine can result in the disease beriberi. Small amounts of vitamins are an essential part of a healthy diet, providing enzyme cofactors for the varied biochemistry of body metabolism

Annular solar eclipse, California, 4/1/92 Featured 27 May 2003 Print

Annular solar eclipse, California, 4/1/92

Annular solar eclipse photographed over Californiaon 4 January 1992. Much of the view of thiseclipse has been obscured by cloud cover. Thecolour of the Sun is orange/yellow as the eclipseoccurred just before sunset. An annular eclipse isseen when the Earth is relatively close to the Sun(near perihelion) and the Moon is relatively far(near apogee). The disc of the Moon seen from theEarth is then smaller than that of the Sun, so aring (or annulus) of the Sun's surface remainsvisible. When the Earth is further from the Sunand closer to the Moon, the same alignment willresult in a total solar eclipse
