Lembadion protozoan Featured 10 Nov 2003 Print

Lembadion protozoan

Lembadion protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Lembadion bullinum protozoan (single-celled animal). It is a ciliate protozoan, normally having numerous fine hairs (cilia) around its mouth (green), although these have been removed here. It lives in fresh water and eats other small organsisms. Protozoa such as this are being used in biotechnology research at Axiva (part of Aventis) in Frankfurt, Germany. They are being studied to see if they can be used to make useful biologically active chemicals such as enzymes, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and antibiotics. Magnification unknown

Coloured MRI scan of the human head (side view) Featured 10 Nov 2003 Print

Coloured MRI scan of the human head (side view)

Brain scan. Coloured Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan through a human head, showing a healthy brain in side view. The face is seen in profile at left. Tissues of the mouth, nasal cavity, and central nervous system are visible. The folded cerebrum of the brain (at top) makes up the larger part of the brain; intelligent thought processes, memory and conscious movement are processed in the cerebrum. At centre (orange) is the elongated brainstem which controls involuntary reflexes like breathing and eye reflexes; it connects with the spinal cord. To the right of the brainstem is the cerebellum (tree-like) which is involved in body posture, balance and the coordination of movement
