Spider mouthparts, SEM Featured 18 Nov 2003 Print

Spider mouthparts, SEM

Spider mouthparts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts of a house spider (Tegenaria sp.). The head of the spider is at upper centre. Several pairs of eyes (round) are on top of its head. Below these are the chelicerae (large pincers), ending in poison fangs (orange, lower centre) that are used to paralyse its prey, mostly insects or other small invertebrates. Either side of the head and extending forwards to bottom centre, are the two pedipalps. These are sensory structures used for manipulation, such as during feeding. The tops of two legs are at lower right and left. Magnification: x20 when printed 10cm high

Mars Global Surveyor image of Valles Marineris Featured 18 Nov 2003 Print

Mars Global Surveyor image of Valles Marineris

Valles Marineris canyon on Mars. Coloured high- resolution image from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft of the Valles Marineris canyon (at centre). The vast canyon is 6000 km long. The area shown in the picture is the Coprates Catena area which is at the centre of the canyon. North is at top. The layered rocks on either side imply a complex and extremely active early history for geological processes on Mars. The image was taken by the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on board the MGS spacecraft which was launched in November 1996. The southern slopes have been coloured red to make the image more "earth-like". Resolution is 4.8 meters/pixel. The image is of an area 10 x 12 km
