Protozoan sexual reproduction, SEM Featured 16 Feb 2004 Image

Protozoan sexual reproduction, SEM

Protozoan sexual reproduction. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two Paramecium caudatum protozoa reproducing sexually by a method called conjugation. Sexual reproduction involves mixing genetic material, as opposed to the cloning of the genetic material in asexual reproduction. These protozoa conjugate by forming a connection (not seen) through which they exchange genetic material. Paramecium protozoa can also reproduce asexually by binary fission. The filaments in the background are Oscillatoria sp. blue-green algae. P. caudatum are single-celled aquatic micro- organisms that feed on plant matter and bacteria. Magnification: x550 when printed 10cm wide
