Pinned specimen of peacock butterfly, Inachis io
Peacock butterfly. Pinned specimen of the peacock butterfly Inachis io. This butterfly displays insect mimicry in having brightly coloured upper wings with eyespots, hence the common name "peacock". Both fore- and hindwings are decorated with rounded eyespots highlighted in a metallic blue colour. They mimic eyes of a larger animal, and serve to startle predators when the wings are suddenly flashed open. Eyespots are normally hidden away when the wings are closed. The undersides of the wings of the peacock butterfly are brown and camouflage the insect when it is at rest. Inachis io adults appear in the summer; this butterfly is found widely from Europe to Japan
