A French heavy-gun battery move up a steep hill during fighting with the Bulgarian army on the Macedonian border, October 1916. The battery was part of the Allied army based at the Greek port of Salonika and required a team of sixteen horses to move the weapon up the sharp incline pictured

A Serbian Dragoon regiment, part of the Allied army based in the Greek port of Salonika, are pictured riding to repel an attack by the Bulgarian army, October 1916. At the beginning of the war the Serbian army had successfully resisted invasion by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, however, a combined offensive by the Central Powers, including the newly allied Bulgaria, forced the Serbian government and army to escape into neighbouring Albania and exile in December 1915

The wreckage of a German zeppelin shot down by British fighter planes and anti-aircraft fire following a bombing raid on London, 23rd September 1916. The photograph shows one of the zeppelin's enormous propellers with a sentry stood close by giving a sense of scale. The airship was one of two to crash in Essex following the raid
