Howard Hughes, US aviation pioneer
Howard Hughes (1905-1976), American aviation pioneer. Hughes was 16 when his mother died. When his father died unexpectedly two years later, Hughes inherited the family estate and dropped out of university. In 1932, Hughes formed the Hughes Aircraft Company to indulge his passion for aircraft. Two years later, Hughes built and test- piloted the world's most advanced plane, the H-1, in which he set a new speed record of 352 miles per hour. Hughes went on to set two more transcontinental records. Hughes died in 1976, having lived as recluse for the last 20 years of his life

Artwork of the Whirlpool Galaxy made by Lord Rosse
Illustration of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51, NGC 5194) made by William Parsons the third Earl of Rosse (1800-1867). Rosse, an Irish astronomer and telescope builder, made this illustration by using a giant reflecting telescope which he built and that became known as the "Leviathan of Corkstown". The telescope was 15m long and had a primary mirror with a diameter of 1.8m. With this instrument he was the first to recognise the spiral shape of some fifteen nebulae, including M51. This illustration was taken from a paper written by Rosse which was published in 1850 and entitled "Observations on the Nebulae"
