Two astronauts on Mars, artwork Featured 8 Feb 2005 Print

Two astronauts on Mars, artwork

Astronauts on Mars. Artwork of two astronauts on Mars standing on the edge of a crater. The arm of one astronaut is visible far right, and the hand of the other astronaut is visible bottom left. Their shadows are visible in the centre. The Martian atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and surface temperatures are well below freezing. Martian astronauts will have to breathe their own air supply and wear heated spacesuits on the surface of Mars. Mars is a rocky desert world and has no surface water. The gravity is about one third of that on Earth

Lower arm bones and ligaments Featured 8 Feb 2005 Print

Lower arm bones and ligaments

Lower arm bones & ligaments. Historical anatomical artwork of lower arm bones (yellow) and ligaments (pale blue). Ligaments are bands of fibrous tissue that hold bones together at joints. The lower arm contains the ulna and radius bones, and is shown from the front (upper left) and behind (upper right, ulna at left). These join with the humerus (upper arm bone) at the elbow, seen down centre in four views/positions (from top): inner side; outer side; flexed, from behind; extended, from front. The wrist joint is seen from the inner side (ulna at top, lower right) and the outer side (radius at top, lower right). From The Bones and Ligaments of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain, London, 1842)
