A total of twelve US astronauts have walked on the Moon as part of NASA's Apollo missions. Armstrong was the first, in 1969, and Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan were the last, in 1972. Piet Cronje, Boer leader and soldier, surrendering to Lord Roberts, Paardeberg, South Africa, 1900. Cronje (1835-1911) fought against the British in the 1st Boer War and defeated the Jameson raiders at Krugersdorp, on 29 December 1895. In the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902) he defeated the British at Magersfontein on 11 December 1899. After his surrender to the British Cronje was imprisoned on the island of St Helena until the end of the war
