The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 19th century.Artist: Johann Poppei Featured 20 Jan 2006 Print

The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 19th century.Artist: Johann Poppei

The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 19th century. The only remaining city gate of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate was commissioned by Frederick William II of Prussia. Built by Carl Gotthard Langhans between 1789 and 1793, it was modelled on the propylaeum, the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens. Topped by a Quadriga of Victory, a chariot drawn by four horses, the gate stands at the western end of the Unter den Linden. The partition of Berlin and the building of the Berlin Wall meant that the gate was inaccessible to East and West Germans from 1961-1989
