Private John Caffrey VC

Illustration recording the VC action of Private John Joseph Caffrey VC (1891-1953) at La Brique, France in November 1915. His citation reads as follows: On 16 November 1915 near La Brique, France, a man was badly wounded and lying in the open unable to move, in full view of and about 350 yards (320 m) from the enemy's trenches. A corporal of the RAMC and Private Caffrey at once tried to rescue him, but at the first attempt were driven back by shrapnel from enemy fire. They tried again and succeeded in reaching and bandaging the wounded man. However, just as they were lifting him up, the RAMC corporal was shot in the head. Private Caffrey bandaged the corporal and helped him back to safety, and then returned and brought in the other wounded man. Date: 1916

Shooting Box to Let Furnished Featured 6 Apr 2017 Print

Shooting Box to Let Furnished

Amusing illustration showing a sign which had genuinely been hung outside a dug-out in France. A photograph of it had been sent to its former tenant, a soldier in Llandudno Red Cross Hospital. It reads, To be let - attractive, well-built dug-out. One receipt/kitchen/bedroom/funkhole, 4 ft by 3 ft. All modern conveniences, water and gas stands one foot above water level. Excellent view of the enemy trenches (snipe & duck). A fine example of the treacherous conditions suffered in the trenches of the Western Front as well as the sense of humour of British soldiers. Date: 1915
