Lady Eileen Orde, nee Wellesley (1887-1952), daughter of the 4th Duke of Wellington and wife of Captain Cuthbert Julian Orde, WW1 pilot, RAC secretary and artist best known for his portraits of Battle of Britain pilots. Eileen herself was a talented artist working on advertisements, wallpaper designs and fabric painting. She appeared in the first photograph to be published in British Vogue and had an affair with Rupert Brooke. Pictured in The Sketch in January 1918 which reports on the birth of her and Cuthbert's first child, a daugher Julian (Doonie). Date: 1918

Captain & Lady Eileen Order in their Chelsea studio

Captain Cuthbert Julian Orde (1888-1968), artist, pictured at home with his wife Lady Eileen Orde (formerly Lady Eileen Wellesley). Both artists, are pictured in their Chelsea studio at work and with their two daughters, Doonie and Jane. Captain Orde was a WW1 pilot, long-serving secretary of the Royal Automobile Club but first and foremost an artist, best-known for his portrait of Battle of Britain pilots during the Second World War. Lady Eileen Orde, nee Wellesley (1887-1952) was a daughter of the 4th Duke of Wellington and an interesting artist who worked in a number of areas. She produced advertisements for the fashion designer Elspeth Phelps, made wallpaper designs and specialised in fabric painting on dresses and fans. Date: 1925
