Dante and Beatrice Portinari from Henry Holiday. The painting depicts an incident when Beatrice, having heard gossip relating to this, refuses to speak to him. The event is shown as Beatrice and two other women walk past the Santa Trinita Bridge in Florence.
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), was an Italian poet, writer and philosopher. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedia and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered one of the most important poems of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. Mr Dunn's portrait as imagined by Miss Coutts; Miss Burdett Coutts portrait as imagined by Mr Dunn. Richard Dunn, an Irish barrister, plagued millionaire philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts with love letters (or abusive ones) and stalked her obsessively. She imagines him in these caricatures as a Dickensian villian; he imagines her as literally made of money. Date: 1853
