American Kestrel Collection

The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is a small falcon that is native to North and South America, and is the smallest and most common falcon in North America, and one of the most colorful raptors, wingspan of about 20 inches, and its body length ranges from 9-12 inches. Its back is slate gray with rusty barring on its wings and tail, while its breast is streaked with black spots on a white background. The male kestrels have more vivid colors than the females, with blue-gray wings and two black stripes on their faces. They feed mainly on insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, moths, dragonflies, wasps, ants and spiders; they also hunt small mammals such as mice or voles. They nest in cavities in trees or buildings; they may also use man-made nesting boxes if available. The American Kestrel population has been declining due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as urbanization or agricultural intensification; however conservation efforts are helping to stabilize their numbers in some areas of the United States.
