Bitterns Collection

Bitterns are a type of wading bird found in wetlands across the world. They have long, slim bodies and short legs, and their feathers are usually brown or black with streaks of white. Bitterns feed on small fish, frogs, insects and other aquatic creatures. They use their long beaks to probe the mud for food. During the breeding season they can be heard making a loud booming sound which is why they are sometimes called 'bog-busters' or 'thunder-pumpers'. Bitterns nest in reedbeds near water where they build large nests made from reeds and grasses. They lay between three to five eggs which hatch after about three weeks of incubation by both parents and can listed as vulnerable species due to loss of habitat caused by drainage and pollution of wetlands but conservation efforts have helped some populations recover in recent years.
