Least Bittern Collection

The Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis) is a small species of bittern found in North and South America, and is the smallest member of the heron family, measuring only about 25 cm in length, brownish-gray back and wings, with white underparts and a white throat. Its bill is yellowish-green with a black tip, its legs are yellowish-green, and its eyes are dark brown. It prefers to inhabit shallow marshes or wetlands with dense vegetation such as cattails or reeds for cover. During breeding season it can be heard making loud booming calls that can carry up to half a mile away. The Least Bittern feeds mainly on small fish, frogs, insects, crustaceans, mollusks and other aquatic prey items. This species is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss from human activities such as drainage of wetlands for agriculture or urban development. Conservation efforts are needed to ensure that this species does not become threatened in the future.
