European Nightjar Collection

The European Nightjar is a medium-sized bird belonging to the Caprimulgiformes family, and is found throughout Europe, parts of Asia and North Africa. The nightjar has a unique appearance with its long wings and short tail. Its plumage is mottled grey, brown and black with white patches on its wings and tail and has large eyes which help it to hunt for insects at night. During the day it perches on tree branches or hides in dense vegetation, making it difficult to spot. Its call is a loud churring sound that can be heard during the summer months when they are breeding. The European Nightjar feeds mainly on flying insects such as moths, beetles and cicadas which it catches in flight using its long bill and wide mouth gape. It nests on the ground in open areas such as heaths or grasslands where there are plenty of insects available for food.
