Indian Nightjar Collection

The Indian Nightjar (Caprimulgiformes) is a species of bird found in the Indian subcontinent, and is a medium-sized nocturnal bird, with mottled gray and brown plumage and long, pointed wings. The male has a distinctive white throat patch, while the female has an orange-brown throat patch. They feed mainly on insects, which they catch in flight at night using their long wings and wide mouths. They breed during the monsoon season from May to August, laying two eggs in shallow scrapes on the ground. During the day they roost on branches or rocks and are well camouflaged due to their mottled plumage, and are shy birds that prefer to remain hidden during daylight hours but can be heard calling at night with their distinctive “churr” call. These birds play an important role in controlling insect populations and should be protected from habitat destruction for future generations to enjoy them.
