Masked Lapwing Collection

The Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) is a species of bird in the family Charadriidae, and is found in Australia, New Zealand, and parts of South East Asia, large wading bird with a wingspan of up to 75 cm and has black and white plumage, with yellow facial wattles and legs. The Masked Lapwing feeds on insects, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates which it finds in wetland habitats such as mudflats or shallow water bodies. During breeding season the male will perform an aerial display to attract a mate; this involves flying high into the air before diving steeply towards the ground while calling loudly. The female builds the nest on the ground near water sources where she lays her eggs; both parents take part in incubating them until they hatch after around 25 days. This species is considered to be of least concern by conservationists due to its wide range and stable population numbers.
