Mountain Plover Collection

The Mountain Plover (Charadriidae Charadriiformes) is a small bird native to North America, and is a ground-dwelling species that prefers open grasslands, such as prairies, meadows, and pastures, grayish-brown back with white underparts and black markings on its wings and tail. Its legs are yellowish-orange in color. This species feeds mainly on insects such as grasshoppers and beetles, but it will also eat seeds and other plant material. During the breeding season, the male builds a shallow nest on the ground in an area of short vegetation where he can keep watch for predators. The female lays three to four eggs which hatch after about three weeks of incubation by both parents. The chicks fledge at about five weeks old but remain dependent on their parents for several more weeks before becoming independent. Although not considered endangered or threatened yet, the Mountain Plover's population has been declining due to habitat loss from agricultural development and human disturbance of nesting sites.
