The Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is a species of bird from the Charadriidae family, which is part of the Charadriiformes order, and is native to South America and can be found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela and has a distinctive black crown with white stripes on its head and neck. Its wings are brownish-black with white tips and its back is grayish-brown. Its breast is white with black markings along the sides, loud call that sounds like "kleep kleep" or "pee-wee". It feeds mainly on insects but will also eat small vertebrates such as frogs or lizards. It nests in open areas near water sources such as rivers or lakes where it can find plenty of food for itself and its chicks. This species is considered to be vulnerable due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as agriculture expansion and urbanization.
