Crab Plover Collection

The Crab Plover (Dromas ardeola) is a species of bird in the Charadriiformes family, and is found in coastal areas across the Indian Ocean, from East Africa to India and Southeast Asia, distinctive black-and-white plumage, with a white head and neck, black back and wings, and white underparts. Its legs are yellowish-orange in color. This species feeds mainly on crabs, which it finds by probing into mudflats or sandbanks at low tide. It also eats other small invertebrates such as worms and mollusks. The Crab Plover nests on beaches or mudflats near its food source during the breeding season, laying two to three eggs per clutch. This species is listed as Near Threatened due to its declining population caused by habitat loss and disturbance from human activities such as beach recreation.
