Northern Jacana Collection

The Northern Jacana (Jacanas Charadriiformes) is a species of wading bird found in tropical and subtropical wetlands across the world and has a long, thin bill and large feet with long toes that enable it to walk on floating vegetation. Its body is brownish-black with white spots, while its wings are black and white. The Northern Jacana feeds on aquatic insects, mollusks, crustaceans, frogs and small fish. It breeds during the wet season when there is plenty of food available. The female lays her eggs in a shallow nest made from vegetation that floats on the water's surface. The male takes care of the young until they are able to fly at about two weeks old. This species is not considered threatened as its population remains stable despite some local declines due to habitat destruction or hunting pressure in certain areas.
