Sooty Tern Collection

The Sooty Tern (Laridae Charadriiformes) is a seabird found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world and has a black head, neck and back with white underparts. Its wings are long and pointed with a white patch on the outer edge. The beak is black and hooked at the tip. It feeds mainly on small fish, squid, crustaceans, jellyfish and plankton which it catches by plunge-diving into the sea from heights of up to 30 metres. It nests in colonies on sandy beaches or rocky islands where it lays one or two eggs in a shallow scrape nest lined with vegetation or debris. The chicks fledge after about five weeks but remain dependent on their parents for several months afterwards before becoming independent, and are highly gregarious birds that can form large flocks when not breeding, often mixing with other tern species such as Bridled Terns or Brown Noddies.
