Black Oystercatcher Collection

The Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) is a species of oystercatcher belonging to the family Charadriiformes, and is a medium-sized shorebird with black plumage, bright orange legs and feet, and a long, thick bill. The Black Oystercatcher lives along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to Baja California in rocky intertidal areas. It feeds on mussels, limpets, barnacles and other invertebrates found in the intertidal zone. Its diet also includes eggs of other birds such as gulls and terns. The Black Oystercatcher is monogamous and pairs remain together for life, and are territorial during breeding season but may form small flocks outside of breeding season when they feed together or roost on beaches at night, and are vulnerable to human disturbance due to their reliance on undisturbed rocky shorelines for nesting sites and food sources. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from habitat destruction caused by development along coastal areas where they live.
