Pied Oystercatcher Collection

The Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) is a species of shorebird belonging to the family Charadriiformes, and is found along the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and some Pacific islands, black head and neck with white underparts, and its wings are black above with white below. Its bill is long and stout for prying open oysters or other mollusks. It feeds mainly on invertebrates such as crabs, worms, mussels, limpets, snails and occasionally small fish or frogs. The Pied Oystercatcher nests in colonies on beaches or mudflats near the shoreline where it can find food easily and has an aggressive territorial behavior towards other birds that come too close to its nest site during breeding season. This species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide distribution range and large population size across its range countries in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands.
