South Island Oystercatcher Collection

The South Island Oystercatcher (Haematopus finschi) is a species of oystercatcher native to New Zealand, and is a large, black and white wading bird with long red legs and a bright orange bill. The South Island Oystercatcher lives in coastal areas, often near estuaries, mudflats, beaches and rocky shores. It feeds on molluscs such as mussels and oysters which it finds by probing the mud with its long bill. It also eats worms, crabs and other small invertebrates. Breeding usually occurs between October and January when the birds form pairs or family groups to raise their young. The South Island Oystercatcher is classified as vulnerable due to habitat destruction from human activity such as urban development, pollution from agricultural runoff, predation from introduced mammals such as cats and rats, and competition for food from other species of birds. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species' habitat so that future generations can enjoy this beautiful bird for years to come.
