Variable Oystercatcher Collection

The Variable Oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor) is a species of oystercatcher in the Charadriiformes family of birds, and is native to New Zealand, Australia, and some parts of South America, black head and neck with white underparts and wings, and its bill is orange-red with a black tip. Its diet consists mainly of molluscs such as mussels, limpets, cockles, and oysters which it finds by probing in the mud or sand with its long bill. It also eats worms, crustaceans, insects, small fish and plant material. The Variable Oystercatcher nests on open beaches or coastal areas where it lays two to four eggs in a shallow scrape on the ground lined with vegetation or pebbles. This species is vulnerable to human disturbance near nesting sites as well as predation from introduced mammals such as cats and rats. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline in numbers due to habitat destruction or degradation caused by human activities.
