Black Stilt Collection

The Black Stilt (Recurvirostridae Charadriiformes) is a species of wading bird native to New Zealand, and is the world's rarest wading bird, with only around 200 individuals remaining in the wild, black plumage with white wing patches and long red legs, and stands up to 40 cm tall. It feeds on aquatic insects, crustaceans, worms and small fish in shallow water or mudflats. The birds breed mainly in braided rivers of the South Island of New Zealand during summer months from October to March. They nest on gravel islands or sandbanks within these rivers and lay two to four eggs per clutch. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this endangered species from further decline due to human activities such as habitat destruction and predation by introduced mammals like cats, stoats, ferrets and hedgehogs.
