American Woodcock Collection

The American Woodcock (Scolopax minor) is a small, stocky shorebird belonging to the family Scolopacidae, and is found in North America and parts of Central America, where it inhabits moist woodlands and open fields, unique appearance, with its large eyes set far back on its head and long bill. Its plumage is mottled brown and gray, providing excellent camouflage in its woodland habitat. During breeding season males perform an elaborate courtship dance that involves flying up into the air before diving back down to the ground with a loud twittering sound. The American Woodcock feeds mainly on earthworms which it finds by probing into soft soil with its long bill. It also eats insects, snails, spiders and other invertebrates as well as some seeds and fruits during winter months when food is scarce. This species is not considered threatened or endangered at this time but populations have been declining due to loss of suitable habitat caused by human activities such as development and logging.
