Bar Tailed Godwit Collection

The Bar Tailed Godwit is a species of sandpiper in the Charadriiformes family of birds, and is found in wetlands and coastal areas across the Northern Hemisphere, from Alaska to Australia. The bird has a long, pointed bill and a distinctive black-and-white striped tail. Its wings are brownish-gray with white patches on the underside. The Bar Tailed Godwit feeds on insects, worms, crustaceans, mollusks and small fish which it finds by probing into mudflats and shallow waters with its bill. During migration it can fly up to 7500 km without stopping for food or rest. It nests in marshes or wet meadows near water bodies where it builds its nest out of grasses and other plant material. This species is listed as Near Threatened due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as draining wetlands for agricultural use or development projects.
