Black Tailed Godwit Collection

The Black Tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) is a large wading bird belonging to the family of Sandpipers Charadriiformes, and is found in Europe, Asia and Africa. The adult has a long, straight bill with a black tip and an orange-brown head and neck. Its back is dark brown with white wing bars and its underparts are pale greyish-brown. In flight, the wings appear very long due to their broad wingspan of up to 1 meter. The Black Tailed Godwit feeds mainly on insects, worms and molluscs which it finds by probing in mudflats or shallow water. During breeding season it can be seen gathering in large flocks on coastal wetlands where they nest in small colonies on the ground or among vegetation. These birds are migratory species that breed during summer months before flying south for wintering grounds where they can be found along coasts or inland wetlands across Europe, Asia and Africa.
