Dunlin Collection

The Dunlin is a small wading bird belonging to the Sandpiper family, and is found in both Eurasia and North America, and is one of the most common shorebirds in the world, distinctive black belly and back, with white underparts and wings. Its bill is short and slightly upturned, while its legs are long and thin. During breeding season, it has a reddish-brown head with black markings on its face. The Dunlin feeds mainly on insects, crustaceans, mollusks, worms, seeds and other small invertebrates which it finds in mudflats or shallow waters. It nests on the ground near water bodies such as lakes or rivers. During migration periods it can be seen flying in large flocks over open fields or wetlands. The Dunlin's population numbers have been decreasing due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as agricultural development or urbanization; however conservation efforts are being made to protect this species from further decline.
