Eurasian Woodcock Collection

The Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) is a medium-sized wading bird of the sandpiper family Charadriiformes, and is a migratory species, breeding in northern Europe and Asia and wintering in southern Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia and has a distinctive long bill with an upturned tip that it uses to probe for earthworms in soft ground. Its plumage is mottled brown above and barred white below, with long wings that are rounded at the tips. The Eurasian Woodcock has an unusual courtship display where the male performs a “roding” flight at dusk over its territory while making loud calls. During this flight it will also perform aerial acrobatics such as somersaults or steep dives to attract females. The Eurasian Woodcock is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its large population size and wide distribution range across much of Europe and Asia.
