Great Snipe Collection

The Great Snipe (Gallinago media) is a species of sandpiper in the family Scolopacidae, and is found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, long bill, short legs, and a brown-streaked back. Its wings are pointed and its tail is long and rounded. It prefers wet meadows, marshes, bogs, wet grasslands and damp woodlands for breeding. The male performs an elaborate courtship display by flying up to 50 meters high with loud drumming noises from its wings while diving steeply towards the ground. During the breeding season it feeds mainly on insects but also takes some plant material such as seeds or berries. In winter it migrates southwards to warmer climates where it feeds mainly on earthworms or other invertebrates found in mudflats or shallow water areas near coasts or rivers.
