Greater Yellowlegs Collection

The Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca) is a species of large shorebird in the family Scolopacidae, and is found in wetlands and shallow water habitats throughout much of North America, Central America, and parts of South America, long bill that curves slightly downward and bright yellow legs. Its back and wings are grayish-brown with white barring, while its head is streaked with black or brown markings. It feeds on insects, crustaceans, mollusks, small fish, amphibians, reptiles and plant material. During breeding season they can be seen in pairs or small groups foraging along the edges of ponds or marshes for food. During migration it forms large flocks which can often be seen flying high overhead in V-shaped formations as they travel south for the winter months to warmer climates.
