Little Curlew Collection

Little Curlew (Numenius minutus) is a species of sandpiper in the Charadriiformes family, and is found in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The bird has a distinctive call that can be heard from far away and has a brownish-grey upper body with white spots on its wings and tail feathers. Its underparts are white with black barring on its breast and flanks. The Little Curlew feeds mainly on insects, worms, molluscs, crustaceans and other invertebrates which it finds by probing the mud or soil with its long bill. Breeding takes place during spring and summer when pairs form monogamous bonds which last for several years until one partner dies or moves away to another area to breed again, and are threatened by habitat destruction due to human activities such as farming and urban development as well as hunting for food or sport in some areas where they live. Conservation efforts are needed to ensure the survival of this species into the future.
