Long Billed Curlew Collection

The Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus) is a large shorebird in the sandpiper family Charadriiformes, and is found in North America, from Alaska and Canada south to California and Mexico. The adult has a long, decurved bill, brown upperparts with black streaks, white underparts with dark barring on the breast and flanks, and yellowish legs. Its call is a loud “cur-lee” or “curl-ee” sound. During migration it can be seen in large flocks on mudflats or grasslands. Its diet consists of insects, crustaceans, mollusks and worms which it obtains by probing into soft mud with its long bill. It nests on the ground near wetlands or fields where there are plenty of insects for food for its young chicks. The Long-billed Curlew is an important species for conservation due to its declining population numbers caused by habitat loss from agricultural development as well as hunting pressure during migration periods.
