Red Knot Collection

Red Knots (Calidris canutus) are a species of sandpiper in the family Charadriiformes, and are migratory birds that breed in the Arctic tundra and winter along coastal areas, from Canada to Tierra del Fuego. Red Knots have a distinctive reddish-brown plumage with white underparts and black barring on their wings. They feed on small invertebrates such as mollusks, crustaceans, and insects, which they find by probing in mudflats or picking from the surface of shallow waters. During migration they stopover at key sites to rest and refuel before continuing their journey southward, and are threatened by habitat loss due to development along coastlines as well as overharvesting of horseshoe crabs which provide an important food source for them during migration. Conservation efforts such as habitat protection and monitoring of horseshoe crab populations are needed to ensure their long-term survival.
