Red Necked Phalarope Collection

The Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) is a small sandpiper of the Charadriiformes family, and is a migratory bird, breeding in the Arctic tundra and wintering in coastal waters around the world. The Red-necked Phalarope has a distinctive red neck and white breast with black markings. Its wings are grey above and white below, with dark barring on its back and has long legs for wading in shallow water, as well as webbed feet for swimming. The diet of this bird consists mainly of insects, crustaceans, mollusks and other aquatic invertebrates which it catches by spinning rapidly in circles to stir up prey from the bottom of shallow pools or streams. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs that nest on dry ground near water bodies such as lakes or ponds where they lay four eggs each season.
